Common questions about the virtual office

Is this a real street address, a PMB, or a PO Box?

It's a real commercial street address in Toronto or Vancouver, issued in Canada Post Unit/# format — not a PMB (private mailbox) at a retail-chain outlet, not a CMRA (commercial mail receiving agency), not a PO Box. The CRA, the federal and provincial registries, Canadian banks, and Amazon Seller Central all accept that kind of address.

Is this a virtual office with meeting rooms and phone answering?

No — on purpose. A typical virtual office bundles a street address with phone answering and meeting-room hours, and you pay for that bundle whether you use it or not. Auteur is the mail-first version: the registered-office address, compliance, and full mail handling that businesses actually run on, without the office-suite padding. If you later need meeting space, day offices can be rented on demand from any coworking operator.

Can I use this address to register a corporation in Canada?

Yes. You can use your Auteur address to incorporate federally or provincially in Ontario or British Columbia. It works as your registered office address.

Will the CRA accept this address for tax filings?

Yes. Use it for GST/HST sign-up, your T2 corporate return, payroll accounts, and any other CRA mail.

Can I open a Canadian business bank account with this address?

Yes. The big Canadian banks — TD, RBC, BMO, Scotiabank, and CIBC — accept a real commercial street address like Auteur on the application.

Will Amazon Seller Central accept this address?

Yes. Auteur addresses meet Amazon's four core requirements: real commercial street address, unique Unit/Suite number, not flagged as a CMRA, and provider authorized to receive Amazon's verification mail. We also issue a lease agreement or utility bill in your business name on request — Amazon's verification team often asks for one or the other on Canadian seller applications.

I run a foreign company entering Canada. Can I use this for subsidiary or extra-provincial registration?

Yes. Auteur runs both Toronto and Vancouver downtown addresses, which is the most common multi-province profile for foreign companies — federal or Ontario incorporation in Toronto, BC extra-provincial registration in Vancouver, on a single account. The address satisfies the registered-office requirement in both jurisdictions.

I'm a non-resident founder with no Canadian SIN. Can I still use this?

Yes. The address itself does not require a Canadian SIN — non-resident directors of Canadian-incorporated subsidiaries use Auteur for the registered office while their personal banking and SIN status sit separately. Canadian business banking does ask for in-person ID at most Big Five branches, which is a separate question we cover in our non-resident banking guide.

Will my home address still show on public records?

No. Your home address normally propagates to at least five places when you register a business — the public provincial registry, the CRA Business Number file, T1 self-employment forms, the business bank account, and every client invoice. With Auteur as the registered office, the Auteur address appears in those five places instead. Sole proprietors specifically benefit because the public registry entry is the one that's searchable by name.

What types of mail can I receive?

Letters, government documents, legal notices, packages, and registered mail from Canada Post, FedEx, UPS, Purolator, and DHL.

How quickly will I be notified when mail arrives?

We photograph the envelope exterior on arrival and email you the same business day. The envelope photo is automatic — full content scans only happen when you request one, so there's no privacy risk on routine deliveries.

What's the difference between an envelope photo and a content scan?

Every piece of mail gets a free envelope photo on arrival — sender, postmark, and exterior visible. A content scan is a separate action: you tap 'Open & Scan' in the dashboard and we open the envelope and photograph every interior page in high resolution. The two-stage approach keeps your routine mail private and lets you scan only what you actually need to read.

Can you forward mail internationally?

Yes. We can forward mail and packages to any address in Canada or internationally. Carrier rates are shown before you confirm.

How is shredding handled?

When you request shredding, documents are securely cross-cut destroyed. You receive a confirmation once shredding is complete.

Is my scanned mail stored securely?

Yes. Scans are encrypted while sent and where we store them. Only your signed-in account can view them. We follow Canadian privacy rules (PIPEDA).

Is Auteur a Canadian-owned operator, or a US service with Canadian locations?

Auteur is Canadian-built and Canadian-owned, with both Toronto and Vancouver addresses operated directly. Most well-known names in Canadian virtual mail (Anytime Mailbox, iPostal1, PostScan Mail) are US companies operating through Canadian partner locations — quality varies by partner, and the address you actually get depends on which local operator is behind the brand. Canadian ownership matters when CRA registration, the Ontario or BC business registry, or a downtown Toronto/Vancouver business profile is the use case.

How is this different from Canada Post Mail Forwarding?

Canada Post Mail Forwarding redirects mail from your old address for 3, 6, or 12 months — it's a temporary bridge for a household that has actually moved. A virtual mailbox replaces the address: you give out a new permanent Toronto or Vancouver street address, mail arrives there from day one, and you read scanned content remotely. Canada Post Mail Forwarding also excludes parcels — only letters, registered mail, and addressed magazines redirect — and runs on Canada Post only. Auteur receives parcels from UPS, FedEx, Purolator, DHL, and Canada Post, and the address never expires.

Does CRA paperless mean I don't need a virtual mailbox?

No. The CRA's 2025 shift to online-by-default applies to most business correspondence in My Business Account, but several categories of mail still arrive on paper: cheques (when direct deposit isn't set up), initial registration documents for newly issued Business Numbers, formal legal and audit notices, charity-specific (RR account) correspondence, and any electronic mail that bounces — at which point the file reverts to paper-by-default. The CRA also still requires a real Canadian street address on every Business Number record regardless of mail preference. The address requirement and the paper-mail exceptions are exactly what a virtual mailbox handles for you.
