If you open a Post Office Box (PO Box) for fan mail, fans see a box number instead of your home address. You still apply on PS Form 1093 in your own name, with two forms of identification. The forms we read have no line for a stage name.
Creators often post a mailing address so fans can send letters and gifts. Many creators also want a channel name on the envelope instead of a legal name. We read PS Form 1093, PS Form 1583, section 508 of the Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) and the PO Box FAQ of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) on October 30, 2026. We sell virtual mailboxes, and the section before the FAQ covers our own rules.
What fans see and what USPS sees when you use a PO Box
Fans see a box number at a Post Office. DMM 508.4.1.4 says "Mail intended for delivery through a box must show the assigned PO box number in the address immediately above the city, state, and ZIP Code." So a PO Box address reads as a PO Box, and your street address stays off the envelope.
USPS sees much more. Item 8 of PS Form 1093 asks for two forms of identification, presented at a Post Office. The form says: "One item must contain a photograph and one must be traceable to the bearer (prove your physical address). Both must be current." The USPS PO Box FAQ adds: "An application process for PO Box service is not completely approved until your identity and current permanent physical address where you reside or conduct business is verified."
For a personal box, a PO Box keeps your home address away from fans, while USPS still has your home address on file.
The Privacy Act Statement on PS Form 1093 covers who else can see that file. The statement says: "We do not disclose your information to third parties without your consent, except to act on your behalf or request, or as legally required." The statement then lists exceptions, so the protection has limits. One line matters for creators who hold a protective court order: "Information concerning an individual box holder who has filed a protective court order with the postmaster will not be disclosed except pursuant to court order."
Whether fan mail can come addressed to your channel name
The PO Box application asks for a person's name even when a business applies. Item 2 asks for a "Name of Business/Organization (if applicable)." Item 3 of PS Form 1093 reads "Name of Person Applying (Last, First, MI -- include title if representing a business/organization)." Item 9 then asks for everyone who will get mail at the box:
"9. On the back of this form, list the name(s) of all individuals, including members of a business, who will be receiving mail at this (these) PO Box number(s)."
The back of the form holds that list as item 11. For personal use, item 11 says "Each adult listed must present two forms of valid identification to the Post Office." DMM 508.4.2.1 sets the same rule in the postal standards:
"Other adult persons, employees or other representatives of organizations, or minors under a parent or guardian, who receive mail in the PO box, or additional box users authorized to pick up mail from the box, must be listed on Form 1093."
The USPS FAQ says "There is only one (1) official (primary) box holder for a PO Box. This box holder may permit others to also use the box." DMM 508.4.3.1 then describes what the box receives: "In accordance with the standards in 4.2, any individual box customer or organization may receive through the box any mail properly addressed to the box number."
We counted the words in both forms and in the two DMM sections. "Pseudonym," "alias" and "nickname" each appear 0 times in PS Form 1093 and 0 times in PS Form 1583. The same three words also appear 0 times in DMM 508.4 and DMM 508.1.8.
So the texts we read give no answer either way. One answer on a Reddit thread says fans can simply write your YouTube name on the envelope. The forms don't say that, and they don't forbid it either. What the rules do ask for is the names of the people who receive mail, and each listed adult must show identification.
The signature line on PS Form 1093 is also worth reading before you fill in item 3. The form says "anyone who furnishes false or misleading information on this form or omits information requested on this form may be subject to criminal and/or civil penalties, including fines and imprisonment." Put your own name on the application. If you want fan mail to arrive in a channel name, ask the Post Office that holds your box before you publish the address. How the name rules work at a virtual mailbox
A virtual mailbox is a private mailbox at a commercial mail receiving agency (CMRA). A CMRA is a business that accepts mail for other people. You apply on PS Form 1583 instead of Form 1093.
PS Form 1583 also starts with a person. Item 4, Name of Applicant, has three boxes: Last Name, First Name and Middle Initial. Item 7 covers a business, and the label on item 7a is "Name of Business/Organization." Item 7i asks for the "Place of Registration." Footnote 8 defines that as "the county and state (if domestic), or the country (if foreign)." For business use, members who will get mail go in item 12. For personal use, footnote 3 says to "complete a separate PS Form 1583 for each adult using this PMB." Item 12 is also where a parent or guardian lists a minor. Our post on how many people can use one virtual mailbox walks through item 12.
The DMM address format leaves a little room in its wording. DMM 508.1.8.3 says line 1 of a mailbox address is "Intended addressee's name or other identification." We found no sentence in DMM 508.1.8 that defines "other identification." So we don't read that phrase as a promise that a channel name works.
The return rule is clearer. DMM 508.1.8.4 says that if the CMRA has no Form 1583 on file for the intended addressee, the agency "must return that mail to the Post Office responsible for delivery" with an endorsement. In our reading, the name on the envelope needs to match a name on a Form 1583 at that mailbox. That name can be the applicant in item 4, a business or organization in item 7a, a member or minor listed in item 12, or another adult on their own Form 1583.
PS Form 1583 has its own privacy line. The Privacy Act Statement says: "In addition, information may be disclosed for the purpose of identifying an address as an address of an agent to whom mail is delivered on behalf of other persons. However, this specific routine use does not authorize the disclosure of the identities of persons on behalf of whom agents receive mail."
PO Box and virtual mailbox for four creator questions
The table puts four common creator questions side by side. A wider comparison of the two products is in virtual mailbox vs PO Box.
| Creator question | PO Box | Virtual mailbox |
|---|---|---|
| Will fans see my home address? | No. Fans see the box number above the Post Office city, state and ZIP Code (DMM 508.4.1.4). USPS verifies your home address. | No. Fans see the provider's address. The agency checks your identification and your address for Form 1583. |
| Can mail arrive in my channel name? | Neither form has a line for a stage name. People who get mail at the box must be listed on Form 1093 (DMM 508.4.2.1). | Mail for an addressee with no Form 1583 on file must be returned (DMM 508.1.8.4). Item 7a is for a business or organization name. |
| Can fans abroad send mail? | We found no sentence in the sections we read that limits a box by the sender's country. | Same result in the sections we read. |
| Can fans send gifts and packages? | Only USPS delivers into a PO Box. Private carriers need Street Addressing, where available. | Each provider sets its own package limits. Ours are 25 pounds and 2 feet on each side. |
Whether fans abroad can send mail to the box
Many creators have fans outside the United States. We read DMM 508.4, DMM 508.1.8 and six sections of USPS International Mail Manual Chapter 7 on inbound mail. None of those sections limits PO Box or mailbox delivery by the sender's country. We also found no sentence that promises foreign mail will reach a box, so our finding stays inside those sections.
DMM 508 does give you a way to stop some foreign mail. DMM 508.1.1.4 says: "An addressee may request the postmaster, in writing, to withhold from delivery for a period not to exceed 2 years any foreign letter or printed matter with a specified name or address on the outside." This post doesn't cover customs or duties on gifts from abroad.
What to know about fan gifts and PR packages
Fan gifts and brand packages often come by private carrier. The USPS PO Box FAQ says: "Private shipping companies or carriers, such as UPS, FedEx and Amazon, are not able to deliver to (place mail in) a PO Box. Only the United States Postal Service® is permitted to deliver mail to a PO Box."
Street Addressing is the USPS exception. The USPS PO Boxes page describes it as "Get a delivery address for packages from other carriers (including Amazon, DHL, FedEx, and UPS); subject to availability and restrictions." For a USPS item that must be signed for or won't fit, the FAQ says the Post Office places a key, a notice or a form in your box with instructions for picking up the item. Package rules at a virtual mailbox are covered in can a virtual mailbox receive packages.
A virtual mailbox sets its own package limits. Our fair use policy says: "Packages can weigh up to 25 pounds and measure up to 2 feet on each side." The policy also says: "Everything physical, letters and packages alike, is stored for 30 days after it arrives." For creators who get many boxes, our policy also says the mailbox "is not a retail package-forwarding or parcel-consolidation depot."
How Auteur handles fan mail
We sell virtual mailboxes, so this is the seller's view. Auteur is in pre-launch, and your exact street address is assigned the day your city opens. Our fair use policy says recipients "are the names on the envelope." Our policy has no sentence about stage names or channel names, so we don't promise how a channel name alone is handled.
The Virtual Business Address receives mail in a business or trade name. Choose it if your channel runs as a business with a DBA (doing business as) name, because our policy says "A DBA that receives mail at your box counts as your business name." The Virtual Mailing Address is for personal mail, in individual names only. Our policy says "Virtual Mailing Address accepts mail addressed to the individual names on your plan only, up to 2 names."
Both plans photograph the envelope of every piece, and we open and scan only when you ask, for one flat fee per piece. Henry, our AI assistant, explains each letter you ask us to open. USPS Form 1583 is required before any provider can receive mail for you. Pricing comes by email with the next steps, and our fees and limits are in our fair use policy.
If fans will write to you in your own name, get your Virtual Mailing Address. Ordering is free, there's no card, and nothing is charged today. If your channel's mail comes to a DBA name, choose the Virtual Business Address instead.
FAQ
Does a PO Box have to be in your real name?
If you apply for a PO Box, item 3 of PS Form 1093 asks for the "Name of Person Applying (Last, First, MI -- include title if representing a business/organization)." You also show two forms of identification at a Post Office. The form has no line for a stage name.
Can fans send mail to a PO Box under a different name?
The forms and DMM sections we read don't answer that question either way. DMM 508.4.2.1 says adults who receive mail in the box "must be listed on Form 1093." Ask the Post Office that holds your box before you publish a channel name with the address.
Can UPS or FedEx deliver fan packages to a PO Box?
The USPS PO Box FAQ says private carriers such as UPS, FedEx and Amazon "are not able to deliver to (place mail in) a PO Box." Street Addressing gives a delivery address for packages from other carriers, "subject to availability and restrictions."
Where can I get mail if I don't have a home address?
That case is different from fan mail. Our post on how USPS General Delivery works covers it.
This post explains USPS forms, USPS mailing standards and our own published policy. The post isn't legal advice.
Bottom line
A PO Box keeps your home address off fan mail, but USPS still checks your identity and your physical address on PS Form 1093. The forms we read have no line for a stage name, and none of the name words we searched for appears in them. At a virtual mailbox, mail for a name with no Form 1583 on file must be returned. Before you post an address, confirm how a channel name will be handled.
